Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant Mesothelioma is a cancer which affects the thin membranes lining the chest and lungs (known as pleural mesothelioma), the abdomen / stomach cavity (peritoneal mesothelioma) or the lining around the heart (pericardium mesothelioma). Pleural mesothelioma, affecting the lining of the lung, is by far the most common mesothelioma accounting for approximately 90 – 95% of mesotheliomas in the UK.

The only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos dust with symptoms only becoming noticeable many years after their initial exposure to asbestos dust.

Unfortunately, asbestos was widely used in very many industries during previous decades even at a time when the dangers the dust were widely recognised.

The use of asbestos was not finally banned until 1999.

Those who worked in certain industries in which asbestos was widely used could be at risk of developing mesothelioma, for example:

  • shipping workers
  • ship repairers
  • heating and ventilation engineers
  • demolition workers
  • plumbers
  • construction workers
  • electricians
  • mechanics
  • engineers

In addition, due to the wide use of asbestos there is also risk to those who work in buildings were asbestos materials remain such as school, kitchen and hospital staff.

Most people who develop an asbestos illness will have been exposed to asbestos dust through their employment.

However, some people for whom we have acted have been exposed to asbestos by coming into contact with the overalls or working clothes of family members who have worked in industries using asbestos products, or by encountering asbestos dust through living close to an asbestos factory.

Our specialist Industrial Disease Solicitors have acted for people who have come into contact with asbestos dust through working in many different industries and professions or through exposure to asbestos outside of work, recovering millions of pounds in compensation.

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with a type of mesothelioma, you may be able to claim compensation for an asbestos-related illness. If you would like to discuss your asbestos- related disease claim with us, then give us a call on 023 9244 8100 and we will be happy to talk with you.

Claiming Mesothelioma Compensation After Death

You can make a claim for compensation on behalf of a loved one’s estate and any dependants they have left if they died from mesothelioma. A compensation claim after death can be brought by the executors or administrators of the deceased’s estate.

No Win – No Fee Mesothelioma Compensation Claims

Larcomes can provide a No Win – No Fee legal service for mesothelioma claims. This is a funding solution, sometimes known as a ‘conditional fee agreement,’ which means that you do not have to pay anything up front for your legal fees and that, if your case is unsuccessful, you will not be responsible for any of the legal fees. These will normally be covered by way of a legal expenses insurance policy which your solicitor will discuss with you at the start of your case.

If your case is successful, the legal fees and other costs incurred are paid by the insurers of the other party and not by you.
