According to the latest statistics from the HSE, there has been a 6% rise in deaths to 2,544 due to Mesothelioma, a cancer that can be caused by past exposure to asbestos, compared with the 2019 number of deaths.

Asbestos Related Disease Statistics 2022

The report shows that there were over 5,000 deaths from the disease, together with asbestos related lung cancer and asbestosis.

Although the importation, supply and use of asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1999, unfortunately, the effect of asbestos continues to devastate lives across the UK today, and many workers continue to be at high risk, especially when working in older buildings, factories, or shipping yards. Sadly, the UK has one of the highest rates of Mesothelioma in the world, probably due to brown asbestos being so heavily used here. Consequently, the HSE estimates that at least 300,000 non-domestic premises in Great Britain contain asbestos.
